Aegon IV
Fire & BloodAegon IV, remembered as the Unworthy, was the eldest son of Viserys Targaryen and the older brother of Aemon. The evidence offers a sharply defined glimpse of him as a toddler, then places him in the royal chronology as king from 184 to 209, but gives little detail here about his adult life or rule.
Identity and Dynastic Position
Aegon IV was the eldest son of Viserys Targaryen. His younger brother Aemon was born to Larra of Lys, and the account identifies him as the second son. In the later dynastic record, Aegon is named as the Unworthy and his reign is dated 184–209.
The Dragon Egg in the Cradle
At Aemon’s birth, Aegon was about a year and a half old. A dragon egg had been placed in the newborn’s cradle; Aegon was found striking the baby with it. Aemon’s cries brought Larra running, and she took the egg from the toddler and disciplined him. The episode ends without injury: Aemon was unharmed, and the immediate danger was stopped by his mother’s intervention.
The Brief Record and Its Limits
The contrast between Aegon’s later royal title and this small domestic scene is striking, but the account does not connect the childhood incident to his later character or conduct as king. It establishes his birth order, his relationship to Aemon, and one specific episode from infancy; the chronology supplies his epithet and regnal dates, without describing the events or policies of his reign.
